Kiebitz Moves take flight

New · now on Google Play

Kiebitz looks over your shoulder.

A Kiebitz is a bird, and in German the onlooker who watches your game over your shoulder. This app imports your chess.com and Lichess games, runs a native Stockfish across your whole history and tells you where you lose games, not where you think you do. Everything stays on your own devices.

News · Google Play

Kiebitz is live on the Play Store.

The closed test is over: the Android app is publicly available on Google Play, no group and no invitation needed. Two things now help Kiebitz most – spreading the word and sending feedback.

Kiebitz stays local-first: no accounts, no cloud, no telemetry – on the Play Store as well.

  1. 1 Released on Google Play The Android app can now be installed like any other
  2. 2 Recommending it helps enormously Friends, club, chess group: every recommendation counts for a small app
  3. 3 Feedback makes Kiebitz better Via this website, by shaking the Android app, or from the settings on Android and desktop

01 Local-first

Your games are your games.

Kiebitz has no server for accounts or chess data. Nothing has to be uploaded and every analysis runs on your device. Games, analyses and progress stay on your devices.

No account
No sign-up, no email, no login.
No cloud
Games, analyses and progress stay local.
No Kiebitz backend
No accounts, no chess-data server, no automatic crash reports.
Sync on your own network
Phone and desktop talk to each other directly, encrypted.

02 How it works

Import, analyze, understand.

01

Import

Enter your username, that’s it. Kiebitz pulls your whole history: duplicate-safe, and PGN for over-the-board games.

chess.com lichess PGN

02

Analyze

A native Stockfish works through the queue in the background: eval per move, inaccuracy, mistake, blunder, accuracy.

03

Understand

Not “well played”, but: which phase, which opening, which time control is where it falls apart.

03 Features

Insights

Where your play breaks down

Four in-depth pages across your whole history instead of one number per game: playing strength, openings by colour, behavioural patterns, and the phases where your errors happen.

  • Accuracy and error rate over months, not over one game
  • Openings with results, deviation and hit rate
  • Patterns: time trouble, long sessions, revenge games
Insights · accuracy and errors by game phase 1,483 games

Repertoire · FSRS

An opening book that actually sticks

Your repertoire is a position tree trained with FSRS spaced repetition, the same approach good flashcard apps use. Every move has its own interval; due reviews are on the dashboard each morning.

  • Add moves from your own games straight into the book
  • Coverage per opening, split by white and black
  • Streak and due cards instead of endless drilling
Repertoire · variations as white and black 17 moves in book · 42 % coverage

Puzzles & endgames

Tactics made from your own mistakes

Alongside the offline Lichess puzzle database, Kiebitz builds problems from the positions where you missed the winning move yourself. Plus curated endgame drills against the engine, optionally with Syzygy tablebases.

  • Puzzle Elo and hit rate per theme
  • Endgames: promotion, rook endings, forced mates
  • All playable offline, no connection needed
Puzzles · hit rate per theme 285 puzzles from your own games

Study

A plan that comes out of your data

The study planner reads your weaknesses from the analyses and suggests what to do today: reviews, one theme, one endgame. As a daily checklist and a weekly plan you can rearrange yourself.

  • Recommendations with reasons taken from your games
  • Drag-and-drop planner for the week
  • Reminders locally on the device
Study · coach recommendations and weekly plan daily goal and streak

Dashboard

Rating history, recent games, due reviews and the analysis queue at a glance.

Game database

Filters, tags, notes per game and per move, position search, PGN import and export.

Live analysis

Board with engine lines, move quality, arrows, optionally with the chessdb.cn opening book.

Seven languages

German, English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi and Arabic – in the app as well as on this website. Plus one carefully made dark theme.

Desktop & Android

Desktop app with auto-update, Android build with native Stockfish per ABI.

Source available

Source-available, not open source: read it and build it yourself, no redistribution.

04 Device sync

Two devices, one network, nothing in between

The desktop is the hub; the phone pairs with a QR code. From then on both sync encrypted, directly over your home network or VPN; address, code and certificate fingerprint are inside the QR. No server in between, because there isn’t one.

  • Train on the phone on the move, analyze on the desktop in the evening
  • The camera is used for QR scanning and nothing else
  • Without pairing, each device works entirely on its own

05 Privacy

What Kiebitz sends, and what it doesn’t.

Chess data stays local

Games, analyses, repertoire and training progress stay on your devices. They are sent neither to Kiebitz nor to the ad provider.

chessdb.cn only if you want it

The online opening book is an option in the settings. Turned off, chessdb.cn is never queried.

Camera only for the QR code

On Android, Kiebitz asks for the camera only when you scan the pairing code. No images are stored or sent.

Ads with transparent controls

Android Free uses Google Mobile Ads. Before the first eligible ad, Google UMP requests the required privacy choices; you can change them under Settings → Ads & privacy.
